Clark William HUMAN was born in Isleham 1895,(Newmarket Q1-1895 3B:544), son of Josiah and Emma HUMAN (née CLARKE) of Pound Lane, Isleham. His father was Joseph on the marriage registration.

1901 census...Aged 6, he was at Fen Bank, Isleham with his father Josiah HUMAN [48] farm labourer and his mother Emma [41]. They were all born in Isleham.

1911 census...Aged 16, a farm labourer, he was at Fen Bank. Isleham still with his parents. It has to be assumed the family moved to Soham after 1911.
"Soldiers Died" has his residence as Isleham Fen.


Enlisted in Newmarket.
On 10th the battalion were in action just south of the Menin Road, midway between Zillebeke and Geluveld. Their excellent website has most extensive war diaries from where comes:-
9th August..All officers and several NCOs reconnoitre route to be taken & objective.
12 midnight..1 N.C.O. per platoon put out on the tapes as left markers. 11th Royal Fusiliers on left flank.
10th August
12:45 am Leading platoons reach tapes & enemy being alarmed send up green lights which bring down heavy barrage
2:28 am another barrage opens by enemy guns. 4:35 am Assault launched accompanied by an excellent barrage. Ground difficult with numerous obstructions including loose wire & tree trunks. Enemy very numerous in INVERNESS COPSE causing many casualties by rifle and M/G fire. Al Officers with the exception of Capt. T.C.Filby and 2nd Lt.J.M.Wilson became casualties. Total casualties 10 officers 272 other ranks.
8 pm Message received notifying relief by 10th ESSEX REGT. This was duly effected by early morning.


CWGC give the death toll as 88 of which only 13 have identified graves.

Local press report:-
Mr. and Mrs. J.Human, of Isleham Fen Bank, have received official intimation that their son, Pte.Clark W. Human, Queen's Royal West Surrey Regt., was killed in action on Aug.10th. The deceased soldier, who was 22 years of age, had been on active service in Flanders about 12 months."
